Friuli-Venezia Giulia, explored in full.

Friuli-Venezia Giulia is where Italy runs out and Central Europe begins.

The region gathers the limestone Karst above the Gulf of Trieste, the wide Friulian plain watered by Alpine rivers, and the Carnic and Julian Alps along the Austrian and Slovenian borders. Three worlds meet here, Italian, Slavic and Austrian, and you hear it in the place names, the dialects and the cooking.

Trieste, the capital, looks out to sea with the grand, melancholy poise of a former Habsburg port, a city of literary cafes and sea-facing squares. Inland lies older ground: the early Christian mosaics of Aquileia, the Lombard carvings of Cividale, Udine under its castle hill. The table leans north, with wind-cured prosciutto di San Daniele, the firm mountain cheese Montasio, and white wines, Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, that rank among Italy's finest.

Come in late spring or autumn, when the vineyards of the Collio turn and the Adriatic light is clear over the Karst.
