The arcaded historic streets of Bolzano

South Tyrol Christmas Markets by Train

Bolzano and Merano from a Bolzano base; Bressanone, Vipiteno and Brunico from Bressanone. Five market days, five nights.

Five market towns, two places to unpack, and no daily hunt for a parking space. This route starts in Bolzano, takes a separate day for Merano, then moves north to Bressanone for outings to Vipiteno and Brunico. Keeping one town for each day leaves room for the old streets as well as the stalls, and for a warm lunch when standing outside stops being enjoyable. The trains connect the valleys; the visits themselves are on foot. Stay for five nights and leave on the following morning, rather than squeezing the last market and a long journey home into the same evening.

Day by day

Bolzano, with time to settle in

Day 1 · sleep in Bolzano

Morning
Arrive in Bolzano and leave your bags at your accommodation if its check-in arrangements allow. Start with the old centre around Piazza Walther, where the main Christmas market gathers beneath the cathedral. Keep this first morning flexible: a delayed arrival should cost you a slow coffee, not a second town's visit. The Italian and German names, Bolzano and Bozen, both appear in travel information.
Afternoon
Give the stalls a first circuit before choosing what to buy. Then leave the square for the arcaded shopping streets, using the market as a starting point rather than spending the whole afternoon in a queue. Have a seated lunch or a substantial warm stop between walks. This is a town day, so mountain excursions and cable cars can wait for another trip.
Evening
Return to the square as the lights become more noticeable, then have dinner in Bolzano. Before bed, check tomorrow's outbound and return journeys to Merano. Save the return options as well as the first train: it is easier to linger without watching the clock when you already know how you will get back.

Merano, along the Passirio

Day 2 · return to Bolzano

Morning
Take a regional connection from Bolzano to Merano and follow your chosen walking or local bus route from the station to the centre. The day's focus is the Passeggiata Lungo Passirio and Piazza Terme, rather than a trip to an outlying garden or ski area. Travel listings also use the German name Meran. Carry only what you need for the day and leave your overnight bags in Bolzano.
Afternoon
Follow the market along the river, with the Kurhaus as a useful landmark. Piazza della Rena has a further Christmas village within the wider Merano programme; treat it as an extension of this same visit. Split your time between the riverside stalls and the streets behind them. A break indoors makes more sense than trying to stay outside from the first opening until dinner.
Evening
Choose either an early dinner in Merano or a return to Bolzano for the evening. Do not assume food stalls and shopping stalls close together: their schedules differ. Leave room to reach the station without rushing across town. Tomorrow is the only change of base, so pack tonight and keep anything bought today secure in your luggage.

Bressanone, the new base

Day 3 · move to Bressanone

Morning
Take your bags north from Bolzano to Bressanone and settle the check-in or luggage arrangement before exploring. In railway and tourism information, Bressanone and Brixen mean the same town. Keep the morning for this short relocation and the old centre. There is no reward for adding Vipiteno today when it already has a full day of its own tomorrow.
Afternoon
Start in Piazza Duomo, the Christmas market's central square. Give yourself time to look at the stalls and the surrounding streets, rather than making a hurried stop between trains. If you want the Hofburg light and music show, check the current performance dates and booking requirements separately; a market visit does not include a performance ticket.
Evening
Have dinner in Bressanone and enjoy an evening that needs no return train. This is the advantage of changing base once: the square is part of your neighbourhood for the next three nights. Check tomorrow's journey to Vipiteno and the walking route into its centre. Keep the accommodation address handy in both languages if you are using local transport.

Vipiteno and the Torre delle Dodici

Day 4 · return to Bressanone

Morning
Travel north from Bressanone to Vipiteno using the regional journey shown for your date, then continue on foot into the old town. Look for Sterzing as well as Vipiteno in the planner. The Torre delle Dodici marks the historic street and the market setting. The official tourism page linked below is the destination for this stop, including its current programme.
Afternoon
Keep the visit at street level: the tower, the old town and the market make a coherent day without a mountain detour. Tower visits are a separate activity; do not assume an old published tour slot or price applies this season. Browse at your own pace and leave time for a proper warm break before returning outside. A smaller town is an invitation to slow down, rather than a reason to add another market.
Evening
Return to Bressanone for another evening in its old centre. Check the next day's Bressanone–Brunico journey in the current planner, including any change or replacement service it specifies. Keeping your bags at the same base makes a changed connection easier to manage. This route does not depend on catching one particular last train after a late meal.

Brunico, then one last night

Day 5 · return to Bressanone; depart next morning

Morning
Head towards Brunico on the connection selected for your travel date. The Pusteria valley services appear under line 400 in transport information; follow the planner for the actual interchange and any replacement bus. Bruneck is the German town name. Keep your bags in Bressanone so the final outing stays a visit, rather than a race to collect luggage and reach a long-distance departure.
Afternoon
Explore the market around Via Bastioni, Piazza Paul Tschurtschenthaler and Ragen di Sopra, then walk the nearby historic shopping street. Brunico gives the trip a different final setting from the riverside in Merano and cathedral square in Bressanone. Choose a few stalls to revisit instead of buying in a rush at the first one. Check food options before relying on a particular stall for lunch.
Evening
Return to Bressanone, pack and have a final dinner near your accommodation. Tomorrow morning is for the journey home or onward travel. If you have booked an early departure, confirm how you will reach the station and leave time for that final connection. Five market days are enough; an extra unplanned stop is less useful than an uncomplicated last evening.

Getting around

Use the südtirolmobil journey planner for your actual dates, saving outward and return options. The timetable changes on 13 December 2026; autumn departure times should not be carried over to later visits. For 2026/27, the five Original South Tyrol Christmas Markets share a season running from 27 November to 6 January, with individual opening ceremonies, holiday closures and shorter days. Keep 25 December out of this five-market sequence and check 24 and 31 December and 1 January individually. Many participating accommodations supply the Südtirol Guest Pass, but it is not included with every room. Confirm eligibility with your host and validate the pass before each journey. It covers the participating regional network, not long-distance trains or every cross-border service; check the exact service before boarding. Book arrival travel separately when required. Allow time for any interchange, and compare fares and departures for your actual travel date.
