Lucca is the provincial capital in northern Tuscany's Piana di Lucca.
Its Roman urban plan remains legible in the historic centre, while the surviving bastioned walls trace the city's third major enclosure and later became a public promenade. Medieval commerce, the Via Francigena and silk manufacture shaped the city's long civic history.
