Erice Historic Centre occupies the summit of Monte Erice, also known in the modern period as Monte San Giuliano, at about 751 metres above sea level. It is a layered historic and archaeological landscape, not a single monument or a UNESCO World Heritage property.1,2

The Comune records successive names including Erix, Iruka, Gabel-el-Hamid and Monte San Giuliano; the name Erice was definitively restored in 1936. These names signal changing historical contexts rather than uninterrupted identity under a single name.1

The Comune presents an Elimian origin for ancient Erice in qualified terms. It also records the summit as a religious and strategic centre associated across cultures with Astarte, Aphrodite and Venus Ericina. Present both as historical tradition and layered cult identity, not evidence of a single unchanged sanctuary or a proven ethnic origin.1

The Elimo-Punic walls enclose the central summit for about 800 metres and have three principal gates: Porta Trapani, Porta Carmine and Porta Spada. The municipal portal dates early phases broadly to the 8th–6th centuries BCE and records Roman, medieval and later conservation interventions, so the visible circuit must be described as stratified.3
