Monreale Cathedral

Monreale Cathedral is a component of the UNESCO World Heritage serial property Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedral Churches of Cefalú and Monreale, inscribed in 2015 as property 1487 under criteria (ii) and (iv). It is not separately inscribed.^1,2

UNESCO dates the nine religious and civic components to the Norman kingdom of Sicily, 1130–1194. Monreale Cathedral is one of two cathedrals outside Palermo in the serial property; it must be read with, not collapsed into, the Palermo components and Cefalù Cathedral.¹

UNESCO identifies the serial property as a socio-cultural synthesis between Western, Islamic and Byzantine cultures, expressed through new concepts of space, structure and decoration. The claim is about the serial property and its components collectively; it must not be reduced to an unsourced stylistic label for every detail at Monreale.¹

UNESCO states that rich tesserae mosaics are among the conspicuous artistic attributes of the serial property and that the authenticity of its mosaics has been confirmed by specialists. This supports a property-level mosaic context, not named scenes, artists, dates or an assumption that every mosaic belongs to the same campaign.¹

UNESCO lists Monreale Cathedral as a National Monument and describes serial-property governance involving different owners and the Sicilian UNESCO Heritage Foundation. It identifies mass tourism, environmental hazards and seismic risk among long-term management challenges. These are stewardship contexts, not current safety claims, admission rules or liturgical schedules.¹
