The story
Palermo's cathedral is eight centuries of Sicily in one building: Norman walls, Arab inscriptions, a Catalan porch and a Baroque dome. Frederick II rests inside in porphyry, and the rooftop walk surveys the whole pink-domed city.

Palermo Cathedral is the cathedral church dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Palermo.1
The official chronology records successive sacred uses at the site: a Christian cathedral before the 9th-century Arab conquest, use as the Gami mosque after 831, and return to Christian worship after the Norman capture of Palermo in 1072.1
The present Norman cathedral was commissioned by Archbishop Gualtiero Offamilio. The Cathedral's official chronology records its consecration to the Assumption in 1185 while noting that the exact construction-start year is uncertain.1
The Cathedral is a layered building shaped by later additions and transformations. UNESCO notes a Catalan Gothic south portico built around 1465 and a prominent dome added around 1785, while the official chronology records the long sequence of alterations.2,1
Palermo Cathedral is one component of the UNESCO World Heritage serial property Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedral Churches of Cefalú and Monreale, inscribed in 2015. It is not a separately inscribed World Heritage property.2
UNESCO understands the nine components collectively as an expression of interaction among Western, Islamic, and Byzantine traditions in the Norman kingdom of Sicily. That framework applies to the serial property, not as a claim that all material in the Cathedral is contemporaneous or stylistically identical.2
