Teatro di San Carlo was commissioned by Charles III of Bourbon and opened in 1737. Its original horseshoe plan was designed by Giovanni Antonio Medrano and Angelo Carasale. After the 1816 fire destroyed the auditorium, Antonio Niccolini’s rebuilding retained the horseshoe layout and proscenium configuration.
A foundational eighteenth-century Italian opera theatre, rebuilt after the 1816 fire within the historic centre of Naples.
