Construction of Milan Cathedral probably began in 1386 on the site of the earlier basilicas of Santa Maria Maggiore and Santa Tecla. The Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo was founded in October 1387 by Gian Galeazzo Visconti to continue the project.¹

Gian Galeazzo's choice of Candoglia marble and Gothic design brought engineers, architects, sculptors and stonecutters from across Europe to the site. The Fabbrica states that the long succession of designers makes a certain single authorship impossible to establish.¹

The high altar was consecrated in 1418. Later phases include the Great Spire and Madonnina in 1774, façade works of 1807–1813, and the twentieth-century doors completed between 1909 and 1965.¹

The Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano remains responsible for the cathedral's conservation and development. Its on-site construction work covers restoration of stone, installations, ornaments, stained glass and liturgical furnishings.^2,3
