Milan at Christmas: Markets, the Duomo and La Scala

Piazza Duomo’s market runs from 1 December 2026 to 6 January 2027. Add the four-day Oh Bej! fair, La Scala’s opening night and Milanese panettone.

Milan’s Christmas season has several calendars. The market in Piazza Duomo runs from 1 December 2026 to 6 January 2027, while the separate Oh Bej! Oh Bej! fair takes place on 5–8 December 2026. La Scala’s opening night falls on 7 December, with Verdi’s Otello at 6pm.

Choose which of those appointments matters most, then leave room for the city between them. The Milan city guide helps with the wider visit; this plan keeps the Christmas dates, cathedral access and evening choices distinct.

Two markets with different dates

The Piazza Duomo market belongs to the longer Christmas season, continuing through Epiphany on 6 January. It makes a natural stop beside the cathedral when you are already exploring the centre. Its 2026–27 dates are 1 December–6 January; check the daily opening hours for the day you choose.

Oh Bej! Oh Bej! is the traditional Sant’Ambrogio fair around the Castello Sforzesco area. In 2026 it falls on Saturday 5, Sunday 6, Monday 7 and Tuesday 8 December. Those four days are a separate appointment from the market beside the Duomo. Check the fair’s current daily hours and access plan before going. The Italian Christmas markets guide helps connect Milan with other stops.

A cathedral visit and a service

Sightseeing and worship have different access arrangements at the Duomo. Entry for prayer and religious services is free, through designated entrances; a worship timetable is not a sightseeing timetable. Choose the cathedral, rooftops or museum activity you actually want, then check its dated visitor arrangements through the official Duomo ticketing service.

Christmas celebrations can affect access, so keep a service and a tourist visit as separate plans. If you are attending worship, use the current liturgical timetable and follow the entrance instructions for worshippers. If you want the rooftops, check that specific activity rather than assuming a cathedral visit includes it.

La Scala on 7 December

The 2026–27 opera season opens with Verdi’s Otello on Monday 7 December 2026 at 6pm. Further performances follow on selected dates from 10 December to 5 January. Choose a particular evening before making dinner or travel arrangements around it.

Opening-night admission requires a ticket. Use the theatre’s official performance page for the event and ticket availability. Leave time for the theatre’s arrival and admission instructions instead of fitting a market visit immediately against the curtain time.

Leave time for panettone

For a walking day, start around Piazza Duomo, continue through the Galleria towards Piazza della Scala, then decide whether the fair’s dates fit a separate visit towards the castle. Keep the route flexible enough for a café stop and a slice of panettone. A single confirmed visit and an evening appointment are enough anchors for the day.

At home, try the Milanese panettone recipe. If you are choosing a cake to share, the panettone and pandoro comparison explains the two styles without turning a preference into a ranking. For the rest of the journey, continue with Italy in December.
