Gubbio’s Christmas tree spreads across a mountain. Its lights trace an outline on Monte Ingino above the town, with a star near the Basilica of Sant’Ubaldo. Seen after dark, the scale becomes the subject: the medieval town sits below a hillside turned into a single illuminated figure.
For Christmas 2026, the lights run from 7 December to 10 January 2027. Choose an evening within that period, then decide whether to add the market, a daytime town visit or the opening ceremony. Those plans follow different calendars. The Gubbio town guide and Umbria’s regional guide help build the rest of the stay.
The dates to plan around
| Experience | 2026–27 dates | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Mountain lights | 7 December 2026–10 January 2027 | Detailed opening-ceremony timetable and guest TBC. |
| Gubbio è Natale | 21 November 2026–6 January 2027 | Individual attractions have their own hours and admission. |
| Christmas market | 21–22 and 28–29 November; 5–8 and 12–13 December; daily 19 December 2026–6 January 2027 | 10am–8pm; 3pm–8pm on 25 December and 1 January. |
The lighting period continues beyond the 6 January end of Gubbio è Natale. Do not assume that market stalls and holiday attractions remain open throughout the tree’s final days. Check the current ceremony notices before fixing an arrival time for 7 December. The detailed 2026 ceremony timetable and guest are still TBC.
A tree made of lights
Volunteers have built the installation since 1981. The outline stretches more than 750 metres along Monte Ingino, with a base about 450 metres wide. These dimensions describe the installation across the slope. Its upper star reaches the area of Sant’Ubaldo, while the lower lights meet the town below.
There are roughly 300 lights in the outline and 400 coloured lights within it, with another 250 forming the star. About 7.5 kilometres of cable connect the installation. Look for the relationship between the town, the slope and the star before trying to take in individual lamps. The whole figure needs distance; standing close to one stretch of lights gives a different impression.
The work behind the evening
The forty-sixth installation began on 6 September 2026. The Alberaioli volunteers lay cables and lights along the mountainside, with support from the local community. Their work starts months before the public lighting.
If you walk on Monte Ingino during installation, take the committee’s warning about work areas seriously: vehicles, materials and equipment may be on the mountain tracks. Choose a town walk for a straightforward daytime visit, rather than treating the light installation as an unrestricted walking route.
Add the market on the right day
The wooden stalls stand in Piazza Quaranta Martiri, with craft objects, Christmas decorations and food specialities. Market hours are 10am–8pm on the listed opening days; Christmas Day and New Year’s Day begin at 3pm. The market area is accessible to visitors with disabilities. That access statement covers the market area, rather than every steep street or attraction in Gubbio.
Use the full market calendar when choosing a November or early-December visit. The opening weekends and the four-day Immacolata period are separate from the continuous run beginning on 19 December. Compare other destinations in the Italian Christmas markets guide.
See the town before the lights
Leave part of the day for Gubbio itself and the Palazzo dei Consoli. A daytime visit makes the town’s buildings easier to appreciate before attention turns to the mountain.
The Colle Eletto lift connects the town with Sant’Ubaldo in about six minutes and is a separate paid activity. Check its current operating hours and your return arrangements directly; a published daytime timetable does not promise a ride after the tree lights come on. For a winter evening, bring warm layers and footwear suited to walking, and arrange the journey back before setting out.
Keep the Christmas in Italy guide for the wider holiday. Give Gubbio an evening of its own, with enough daylight on either side of the illuminated spectacle to enjoy the town.
