A white wine on ancient marine ground

Yellow sands and clays underlie the vineyards around San Gimignano.

Vernaccia di San Gimignano is the principal grape of the town’s namesake white wine. Its hillside vineyards grow on ground formed from ancient marine deposits, with yellow sands and yellow or grey clays. The proportions of these materials change from one slope to another. This shared geology provides a starting point for exploring the wines beyond the familiar skyline of San Gimignano.
