Living Nativities in Italy: Dates and Visits

Matera, Custonaci, Greccio, Rivisondoli and Equi Terme: choose the setting, check confirmed dates and plan admission for Christmas and Epiphany.

A living nativity, or presepe vivente, puts people inside the Christmas story. What visitors do varies considerably: follow a route through inhabited streets, enter a reconstructed village or watch a historical performance. Choose the setting and the admission arrangements together. A picturesque town alone does not tell you whether there is a performance on the night you arrive.

Matera and Custonaci have confirmed dates for Christmas 2026 and Epiphany 2027. Greccio, Rivisondoli and Equi Terme offer established traditions to consider, with parts of their new-season programmes still unconfirmed. Build a trip around a dated booking, then add time to see the place in daylight. For the wider holiday, use the Christmas in Italy guide and December travel advice.

Choose the experience before booking

Matera, Basilicata5–6, 12–13, 19–20 and 26–27 December 2026; 2–3 January 2027A ticketed 1.5 km route through Sasso Caveoso; select the date and admission time.
Custonaci, Sicily25–27 December 2026; 3–6 January 2027Timed entry and shuttle arrangements; arrive at Piazza Campicello at least 30 minutes before the booked time.
Greccio, Lazio2026–27 performance dates TBCA six-scene historical re-enactment; the town’s craft market has a separate calendar.
Rivisondoli, Abruzzo2027 programme TBC; traditionally 5 JanuaryAn outdoor representation at Piana di Piè Lucente; confirm the new edition before travelling.
Equi Terme, TuscanyFull 2026 nativity programme TBCA village route ending at the cave entrance; ordinary cave tours have separate booking arrangements.

The confirmed dates above are individual performance days, not continuous opening periods. A booking window running to January does not make every December evening available. Use the event’s own ticket channel and check the selected date before paying.

Matera: walk through Sasso Caveoso

The sixteenth edition, Vera Fratellanza, follows a 1.5 km route through Sasso Caveoso with more than 200 performers, historical re-enactors and theatre participants. Its dedication marks 800 years since the death of Saint Francis. The ten performance days begin on 5 December and finish on 3 January.

Admission is €12 for adults and €7 for children aged 5–10; under-fives enter free. Presale and ticketing charges are additional. Choose the actual slot through the Matera ticket office, reached from the event website. Check any assistance needs before buying: a 1.5 km walking route is a different commitment from viewing a scene beside an entrance.

Reserve another part of the stay for the Sassi. That makes room for the architecture without trying to study it while following a timed event. Read the ticket conditions before booking, and check the event notices before travelling in severe weather.

Custonaci: the village at Grotta Mangiapane

Monte Cofano and the coastal plain near Custonaci

At Grotta Mangiapane, the Nativity sits within a reconstruction of Sicilian village life and traditional work. The forty-second edition runs on 25–27 December and 3–6 January. It is a specific Christmas event, separate from an ordinary visit to the Museo Diffuso.

Book through the Custonaci event ticket page. Entries are allocated in half-hour slots, with a shorter schedule on Christmas Day. Use the time printed on your ticket, rather than treating the overall event hours as your admission time. Reach the Piazza Campicello parking area at least 30 minutes beforehand for ticket validation and shuttle directions.

Strollers and animals are not admitted. The route is unsuitable for people with severe walking difficulties; discuss individual access needs directly with the organiser before booking. Children aged 4–10 qualify for a reduced ticket. The ticket page also sets out the documentation and collection arrangements for disability-related concessions. Check those conditions for your party rather than assuming that every accompanying adult is entitled to free entry.

Ordinary Museo Diffuso visits are available until 8 December 2026. Select the nativity event when opening the ticket calendar for a Christmas performance.

Greccio: the story of Christmas 1223

The convent of Greccio against its wooded limestone cliff

Greccio’s connection with the presepe begins with Francis’s Christmas celebration in 1223: a manger, hay, an ox and a donkey, and a community gathered for worship. The modern historical re-enactment uses six scenes to tell the story of Francis and that Christmas. It asks for a different kind of attention from a walk through a village of open workshops.

The 2026–27 performance dates are still TBC. Use Pro Loco Greccio for the new programme before arranging a journey around a particular evening. The craft and nativity-object market runs from 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027 in the village; that market calendar does not confirm a re-enactment on the same day. Check the town’s event calendar for the separate activities you want to combine.

Rivisondoli: an outdoor representation in Abruzzo

Rivisondoli’s modern tradition began in 1951 and takes place at Piana di Piè Lucente. Its customary date is 5 January, the eve of Epiphany. That is the tradition to keep in mind; the 2027 programme, start time and admission arrangements still need confirmation before a dedicated trip.

Check the event organiser for the new edition. Plan for an outdoor winter visit, with warm layers, suitable footwear and a return journey arranged before the evening. Snow in a publicity photograph is not a forecast for your visit.

Equi Terme: lanes leading to a cave

In Equi Terme, in the Lunigiana area of Tuscany, the living-nativity route passes through village lanes and courtyards before reaching the Nativity at the cave entrance. Its characters include shepherds, the Magi and people demonstrating traditional trades. The setting is part of the appeal, but the full 2026 performance calendar and admission details are still TBC.

Use the local association information to find the current organiser. Guided cave activities have their own calendar, including evening visits on 26 and 27 December 2026. A cave-tour booking should not be treated as admission to the whole village nativity. Confirm the experience, date and entrance arrangements before combining the two.

Before setting out

Choose one performance as the focus of an evening. Allow time for check-in or a shuttle, and ask about steps, surfaces and walking distance if anyone in your party needs assistance. Do not infer access from the word “village” or “cave”; the conditions belong to the particular route.

For children, check the event’s own age bands and stroller rules. For every party, check the return journey, weather notices and ticket conditions. Keep the broader regional Christmas guide for the days around the event, rather than relying on an unconfirmed performance to carry the entire stay.
