Trento's cathedral, dedicated to Saint Vigilius, was begun in 1212 under Prince-Bishop Federico Vanga to the design of Adamo d'Arogno, and it mixes Lombard Romanesque with Gothic across three centuries of work.

It matters beyond Trentino: the Council of Trent (1545 to 1563) held sessions here, and the Catholic Counter-Reformation took shape in this nave. On the north transept is a rose window depicting the Wheel of Fortune, and beneath the floor lie the remains of a fourth-century early Christian basilica, visited with the diocesan museum ticket. Outside, the Piazza Duomo with the Neptune fountain and the frescoed Cazuffi-Rella houses is among the finest small squares in the Alps.

Getting there
The cathedral is on Piazza Duomo in Trento's pedestrian center, a short walk from the railway station (about 500 meters). Car access to the center is limited, so use one of the signposted garages just outside it.
Accessibility
The main entrance on Via Giuseppe Verdi is accessible, but the crypt and the sacristy have no wheelchair access. Visitors with disabilities and a companion enter the diocesan museum free.

Entry to the cathedral is free. The Museo Diocesano Tridentino next door charges €7 (€5 reduced) and includes the early Christian basilica of San Vigilio beneath the cathedral. Dress modestly and expect limited access during Mass.

Take the museum ticket even if you have little time: it opens the excavated fourth-century basilica under the cathedral, the building the whole church grew from and the part most visitors never see.

Good to know

How long should you spend at Trento Cathedral?

About 45 minutes for the church and the piazza. Add time if you want the diocesan museum and the basilica beneath, which are visited on one ticket.

Is Trento Cathedral worth visiting?

Yes, particularly if you care about history: this is the church where the Council of Trent held sessions and where the Counter-Reformation took shape. It is also one of the best preserved Romanesque-Gothic cathedrals in the Alps.

Can you see the early Christian basilica under Trento Cathedral?

Yes. It is part of the diocesan museum route and needs its own ticket, separate from entering the cathedral itself. It adds about half an hour and is a quiet counterpoint to the nave above.
