The story
Ostuni whitewashes itself every year by ordinance born of plague defense, and the hill town reads as one white sculpture above the olive plain. Its lanes spiral up to a Gothic cathedral with a fifteenth-century rose window.

Ostuni's ‘White City’ is the historic urban area on its hill, not a single monument. The municipality describes whitewashed homes and lanes within the historic centre and names the Cathedral as a distinct monument within that wider fabric.1
The white character is a continuing urban-management issue, not merely a tourist label. Municipal Ordinance 227 of 27 May 2025 requires owners in the historic centre and eighteenth-/nineteenth-century zones to renew external façade whitewashing with lime milk. That rule does not prove that every visible façade has the same age, material history or current condition.2
Regional landscape material describes a contrast between the walled historic settlement and terraced gardens below the ancient core, descending toward the plain of ancient olive trees. The gardens and olive landscape are connected contexts, not automatically public amenities or part of every historic-centre visit route.3
