The story
Alberobello stacks some fifteen hundred trulli up its two hills, white cones built drystone so they could be unbuilt before the tax man arrived. Painted symbols on the roofs mix Christianity and magic in honest proportion.

The Trulli of Alberobello is itself a UNESCO World Heritage property (787), inscribed in 1996 under cultural criteria (iii), (iv) and (v). It is not merely a component within a broader historic-centre inscription.1
The 10.52-hectare property comprises six land parcels: the trullo-dominated districts of Rione Monti and Rione Aia Piccola, plus Casa d’Amore, Piazza del Mercato, Museo Storico and Trullo Sovrano. The six-part property boundary—not an undifferentiated town-wide label—defines the World Heritage scope.1
A trullo is a traditional dry-stone building with a corbelled roof. At Alberobello, roughly worked limestone and a mortarless double wall support a roof built in two skins: an inner dome and an outer cone of corbelled limestone slabs. The form is therefore a building system, not just a conical silhouette.1
UNESCO traces scattered rural settlement in the present Alberobello area to around 1000 CE, with the villages that became Aia Piccola and Monti growing over time. The property’s significance is inseparable from its survival as a historic urban landscape with inhabited buildings; it should not be described as a single open-air museum.1
