Speleologist Franco Anelli dropped into the Grave sinkhole in 1938 and surfaced with Puglia's underground masterpiece. The guided walk runs three kilometers through canyons of stalactites to the Grotta Bianca, a chamber so pale it seems lit from within.

The Castellana Caves are a karst cave system at Castellana Grotte with a managed public show-cave route. The route, the wider underground system and the Museo Speleologico Franco Anelli are connected but distinct entities; a visitor itinerary must not stand in for the whole karst system.1,2

MiC identifies La Grave as the first and largest cavern in the underground system and the only chamber naturally connected with the exterior. That geological threshold should remain distinct from later named chambers and from the visitor facility.1

The Ministry catalogue records a nineteenth-century discovery by Vincenzo Longo and deeper exploration in 1938 by the speleologist Franco Anelli, accompanied by Vito Matarrese. ‘Discovery’ and later exploration are separate events; the latter does not erase earlier local knowledge or create a claim that Anelli discovered every part of the system.3

The Museo Speleologico Franco Anelli is a separate museum institution, inaugurated on 23 January 2000 and named for the speleologist Franco Anelli. It should be represented as a museum with its own collections and access conditions, not as an interchangeable label for the caves.2
