Noto rebuilt itself in honey-colored limestone after the 1693 earthquake, and its cathedral crowns the result above a ceremonial staircase. The dome collapsed in 1996 and rose again faithful to the original, glowing at every sunset.

Noto Cathedral is the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas of Myra, the episcopal seat of the Diocese of Noto. It is within the Noto component of the UNESCO serial property Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto, inscribed in 2002, but is not separately inscribed.1,2

Construction began after the 1693 earthquake. A temporary church was replaced by a masonry building opened for worship in 1703; a larger church later incorporated it until 1768. The MiC catalogue says the project, long attributed to Angelo Italia, is now plausibly attributed to Rosario Gagliardi, so authorship remains qualified.1,3

The dome collapsed in 1848 and was rebuilt to a design by engineer Cassone. On 13 March 1996 a collapse destroyed the right nave and central nave; reconstruction and restoration culminated in reopening for worship on 18 June 2007.1
