From the lane, the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia is a low brick building with a Latin-cross plan and a square tower-lantern concealing the dome. Ravenna’s official visitor history says it was commissioned after 426 as Galla Placidia’s intended burial place and was meant to connect by a narthex to nearby Santa Croce. It never served as her tomb: she died in Rome in 450 and was buried there. Three marble sarcophagi remain inside, described by the city as empty.

Inside, yellow marble covers the lower walls while mosaics fill the upper walls, arches, lunettes and dome. The central vault places a golden Latin cross among concentric fields of stars and four figures the city identifies as the Beings of the Apocalypse. The lunettes include the paired stags drinking from a spring and, above the entrance, Christ the Good Shepherd. The regional heritage catalogue identifies Saint Lawrence before a flaming grill in the south-arm lunette, opposite the Good Shepherd at the entrance. Small alabaster windows filter the light. A local story links the starry vault with Cole Porter’s “Night and Day”; Ravenna’s tourism office repeats it but gives no documentation that the song was composed here. The mausoleum belongs to Ravenna’s UNESCO-listed group of eight early Christian monuments. Just behind it, San Vitale makes a natural next stop; both are included in the four-monument circuit, which also covers Sant’Apollinare Nuovo and the Neonian Baptistery.

Five things worth finding

If you see nothing else, see these.

  1. The starry vault

A golden Latin cross sits within concentric fields of stars, surrounded by four figures the municipal guide identifies as the Beings of the Apocalypse.Dome above the crossing of the four arms

  2. Christ the Good Shepherd

The municipal guide identifies Christ among the flock in the mosaic above the entrance, distinct from the starry dome.Above the entrance

  3. The stags at the spring

Two stags drink from a spring in garden settings, a paired subject in the east and west lunettes.East and west lunettes

  4. A brick cross beneath a square lantern

The compact Latin-cross plan is visible outside; a square tower-lantern hides the dome at the crossing. The city estimates that subsidence lowered the building about 1.5 metres from its original level.Exterior and crossing

  5. Three empty marble sarcophagi

The city describes all three sarcophagi as empty: one plain example is Roman, while the other two are Late Christian works dated to the fourth–fifth centuries. None is identified as Galla Placidia’s.The three arms of the interior

Plan your visit

Everything you need before you go.

Reservation guidance
Book ahead; confirm reservation and ticket rules with the operator.
Time needed
20 minutes
Best time
Pause inside for a moment as your eyes adjust to the subdued light before looking up to the starry vault.
Getting there
The address is Via San Vitale 17, in Ravenna’s central limited-traffic zone, just behind San Vitale. Ravenna Turismo lists bus 70 to Piazza Baracca and says the monument is readily reachable by bicycle. Paid parking is listed at Piazza Baracca and supervised parking at Largo Giustiniano.
Accessibility
Ravenna Turismo lists a ramp, visitor support, tactile maps, Braille or large-print information, subtitled and sign-language media, and other accessible orientation materials for the monument. Its page does not specify the ramp location or confirm a step-free route throughout the historic interior. Contact the operator before visiting to check a particular mobility need.

No standalone Mausoleum price is listed by Ravenna Turismo. The full-price four-monument circuit is €12.50 and includes San Vitale, Sant’Apollinare Nuovo, the Mausoleum and the Neonian Baptistery; the five-monument circuit is €14.50 and adds the Archiepiscopal Museum and St. Andrew’s Chapel. Each circuit is valid for seven days with one entry per included site. Reduced rates are listed for eligible visitors. Checked 2026-10-08. Ravenna Città del Mosaico displays a different ticket breakdown; confirm the applicable circuit and total with the operator before purchasing.

Give your eyes a moment to adjust to the subdued interior, then look from the central starry vault to the individual lunettes and the marble sarcophagi. If you plan to see several Ravenna monuments, compare the four- and five-monument circuits before choosing a ticket. Allow around 20 minutes as an editorial planning estimate, subject to any entry-slot limits; this is not an operator-published duration.

Before you book

Was Galla Placidia buried here?

The building was intended as her burial place, but Ravenna’s municipal history says she died in Rome in 450 and was buried there. The three marble sarcophagi in the mausoleum are described as empty.

What does the ticket cost?

Ravenna Turismo does not list a standalone Mausoleum fare. The full-price four-monument circuit that includes it costs €12.50; the five-monument circuit costs €14.50. Each is valid for seven days, with one entry per included site.

Do I need to book in advance?

Ravenna Turismo lists online and reservation-centre booking, plus same-day ticket-office sales subject to availability. Ravenna Città del Mosaico separately lists mandatory reservation for Galla Placidia and the Neonian Baptistery. The pages do not explain how same-day sales fit that rule: book ahead and confirm the entry procedure with the operator before travelling.

How much time should I allow?

Ravenna Turismo does not publish a recommended duration. Allow about 20 minutes as an editorial estimate for a focused visit; a multi-monument circuit requires separate time at each site.

Is the interior accessible?

The municipal visitor page lists a ramp and tactile, Braille/large-print, subtitled and sign-language materials. It does not confirm a step-free route throughout the historic interior, so contact the operator about your specific needs.

Which mosaics should I look for?

Start with the golden cross and star fields in the dome, then find the Good Shepherd above the entrance and the paired stags in the east and west lunettes. The municipal guide also describes apostle scenes and a Saint Lawrence episode among the lunette mosaics.
