A clear guide to leather terminology, how tanning and finishing affect the material, and why care depends on the item.
From hide to leather
Reading the grain
The grain is the outer surface, marked by follicles characteristic of the animal species. “Full grain” means that the grain has not been removed by corrective mechanical treatment; “corrected grain” has been partly buffed and then finished. Splitting divides a hide into layers, so the term alone does not describe the finish or overall quality of an item.1,3
