Tobacco-brown Fendi Baguette with FF jacquard, dark leather straps and a gold clasp on pale stone.

Fendi began in Rome in 1925 with a handbag shop and fur workshop. Selleria hand stitching, the Baguette bag and later collections show how the house carried that workshop inheritance into a wider fashion business.

A Roman beginning

Adele and Edoardo Fendi opened their first handbag shop and fur workshop on Rome’s Via del Plebiscito in 1925. Bags and specialist fur work were part of the business from its first address.1,2,3

Beyond Rome

As the business grew, Fendi expanded its fur workshops. By the 1930s and 1940s the name was known beyond Rome; leather goods and articles for travel became part of the house’s work over the following decades.1,3

Selleria: a Roman stitch

Fendi traces Selleria stitching to Roman master saddlers, who passed the technique to Adele and Edoardo for the house’s first bag line. Selleria uses hand stitching on Cuoio Romano leather for bags and clothing details.2
