Portovenere is a historic settlement at the eastern end of the wider World Heritage cultural landscape of Portovenere, Cinque Terre, and the Islands (Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto). UNESCO identifies it as a Roman-period commercial and cultural centre whose compact waterfront form culminates at Castello Doria. Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto are related island landscapes with early monastic remains; Castello Doria and the churches remain distinct monuments, not interchangeable names for the settlement.

Portovenere is within the UNESCO World Heritage property Portovenere, Cinque Terre, and the Islands (Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto), inscribed in 1997 under criteria (ii), (iv) and (v). It is not separately inscribed.1

UNESCO identifies Portovenere as an important commercial and cultural centre from the Roman period, with archaeological remains surviving nearby. Its compact waterfront form culminates at the Doria Castle, which records both medieval and later phases.1

Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto lie off Portovenere. UNESCO notes their early monastic remains, and treats the islands, the settlement and the surrounding landscape as connected elements of the wider property.1

Castello Doria is a related but distinct medieval fortress on a rocky promontory. The municipality describes its irregular pentagonal plan, sea-facing southern bastion and layered defensive circulation.2
