The story
The largest Aeolian island gathers its history onto a walled acropolis above the harbor, with one of the Mediterranean's best small museums inside. Around the coast, white pumice beaches and black obsidian flows tell the volcanic story plainly.

Lipari is the largest island of the Aeolian archipelago, north of Sicily. It is within the UNESCO World Heritage property Aeolian Islands, inscribed in 2000, rather than a separately inscribed property.1,2
People settled on Lipari and Salina a few centuries before 4000 BCE, drawn to obsidian from Monte Pelato. The municipal history describes obsidian as a prized cutting material before metalworking and records its wide exchange beyond the islands.1
The Castello area is the focus of Lipari's historic settlement, on the ancient Greek and Roman acropolis. The municipality records archaeological evidence there from Neolithic, early-metal, Bronze Age and Hellenistic communities, alongside later fortifications and religious buildings.1
Lipari is geologically and volcanologically complex. The municipal account identifies former volcanic activity, including the Monte Pelato eruption around 700 CE and the Rocche Rosse obsidian flow, while present endogenous manifestations include fumaroles, solfatares and thermal springs.1
