Arancello bottle with Sicilian oranges

Arancello

Arancello is a sweet orange liqueur: a small glass brings citrus flavour to the end of dinner, and a little can give a dessert an orange accent. Choose the actual bottling before deciding how to serve it.

Orange peel supplies the aroma

In Arancello Pronol, Navel orange peel infuses in alcohol for 30 days after the white pith is removed. After filtration, sugar, water and grappa are added. This is one producer’s formulation, not a rule that every arancello contains grappa. It also explains why orange juice is not a direct substitute: the liqueur brings peel aroma, sweetness and alcohol to a recipe.

Start with a small tasting beside dessert

Serve Arancello Bottega chilled, either neat or alongside ice cream, fruit salad or dark chocolate cake. For a first tasting at home, our suggestion is to pour a little beside a plain dessert rather than immediately mixing it through the whole dish. Taste each separately, then together, so you can decide whether you want more citrus or less sweetness.

If you want to add it to a dessert, try a little in a separate spoonful first. This gives you a useful check before committing the whole bowl. When making a cocktail, use a recipe that specifies the style of orange liqueur and compare its required strength with your bottle. Do not assume that every orange liqueur will give the same balance.

Read the strength, not just the name

Arancello Bottega is 21% vol.; Arancello Pronol is a different bottling at 25% vol. They share an orange name, but not an identical specification. Check the label on the bottle you are buying, especially when replacing one product with another in a cocktail. Alcohol strength alone will not tell you how sweet the finished drink tastes.

Follow the bottle’s serving instructions

Check the product’s chilling and storage directions before serving. Different arancello bottlings have different specifications; the name alone is not a freezer instruction.
