The Sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo at Monte Sant’Angelo is a component of the serial UNESCO World Heritage property Longobards in Italy. Places of the Power (568–774 A.D.), inscribed in 2011 under criteria (ii), (iii) and (vi). It is not separately inscribed, and neither the whole town nor the whole Gargano inherits the component’s World Heritage status.1,2

The Archangel Michael is said to have appeared in this Gargano cave in 490, founding the West's oldest shrine to him. Pilgrims from Lombard kings to Crusaders cut their names into the walls on the way down to the grotto.
