Trani Cathedral is the Cattedrale di San Nicola Pellegrino, the principal Catholic place of worship in Trani and mother church of the Archdiocese of Trani-Barletta-Bisceglie. It is an active cathedral, not merely a historic monument on the waterfront.1

The Archdiocese places the start of the new cathedral in 1099, connected to the canonisation of Nicholas the Pilgrim and Archbishop Bisanzio’s plan to house the new saint’s remains. Its account records the later 1142 translation of the remains to the basilica. This is a religious and institutional chronology, not an independent forensic finding about relics.2,3

Ministry investigations beneath the cathedral identified substantial traces of three archaeological stratifications, each corresponding to a place of worship. The site included a Constantinian-period shrine and a basilical building dated between the seventh and ninth centuries before the present cathedral. The Romanesque building should therefore not be described as occupying an empty site.4

A Ministry conservation project addressed the campanile after falling stone fragments exposed priorities for its protection and safety; work included masonry consolidation and treatment of stone surfaces. This documents a specific intervention, not a present-day assurance about structural condition, tower access or visitor safety.4
