The story
Roger II vowed a church if he survived a storm at sea, and Cefalu's twin-towered cathedral was the payment. Its apse holds the most tender of Sicily's Pantocrators, gazing down a nave begun in 1131.

Cefalù Cathedral is the cathedral church associated with the Diocese of Cefalù and the church founded in honour of the Saviour in Roger II's 1131 institutional refoundation.1
The diocesan history records that Roger II refounded the church at Cefalù on 7 June 1131, Pentecost, in preparation for a church he intended to build and for its clergy.1
A bull of 14 September 1131 raised the Church of Cefalù to cathedral status. The diocesan history identifies Jocelmus, in office from 1131 to 1146, as the first bishop of the new Diocese.1
UNESCO's evaluation records that Roger II founded Cefalù Cathedral in 1131 intending it as his dynastic mausoleum. The evaluation also notes that subsequent building changes included a later portico, additions to the towers, and modification of apse windows for mosaics.2
Cefalù Cathedral is one component of the UNESCO World Heritage serial property Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedral Churches of Cefalú and Monreale, inscribed in 2015. It is not separately inscribed.3
UNESCO frames the nine components collectively as a socio-cultural syncretism among Western, Islamic, and Byzantine traditions in the Norman kingdom of Sicily. The framework is property-wide and does not authorize a shallow, timeless 'fusion' label for every feature.3
