Castello Caldora watches over Pacentro from a hill above the Peligna valley, at the foot of Monte Morrone in the Majella foothills. Records mention it from the eleventh century, and it takes its name from the Caldora family, who held it in the 1300s, followed by the Cantelmo, Orsini, Colonna and Barberini.

The Orsini added the round bastions in the second half of the 1400s, so the trapezoid fortress now has three tall square towers (the Torre del Re rises 25 meters) and three round ones, inside a double wall. The town has owned it since 1957. You can climb the Torre del Re to a terrace for a wide view of the Majella and the village roofs.

Getting there
The castle is in the historic center of Pacentro, at Largo del Castello, about 8 km from Sulmona by road (SS487 toward Pacentro). Park at the edge of the village and walk up through the lanes; the streets are narrow and steep.
Accessibility
The tower is reached by stairs, and the village lanes are steep; not suitable for wheelchairs.

Small entry fee; there is no guide, but information panels explain the history and architecture. Last updated September 2026. Prices change, so check the official site before you go.

Climb the Torre del Re for the view, then explore Pacentro’s old lanes; the town is one of Abruzzo’s prettiest and is a good lunch stop on the way to Sulmona.

Good to know

How long should you spend at Castello Caldora?

About an hour. That is enough for the courtyard, the towers and the climb to the terrace of the Torre del Re, where the view of the Majella is the reward.

Is Castello Caldora worth visiting?

Yes, especially for the terrace view over the Majella and Pacentro's rooftops. It is one of the most complete medieval fortresses in the Peligna valley.

Can you see Castello Caldora and Pacentro in one day?

Yes. The castle sits above the village square, so the castle, the village lanes and the church of Santa Maria Maggiore are easy to combine in a half day.
