Basilica di Santa Croce is an active parish church in Lecce and forms, with the former Celestine convent, a monumental complex identified by the Ministry as a symbol of Salento Baroque. The basilica and the former convent should be treated as related, not interchangeable, entities.^1,2

The church’s construction began in 1549 and continued for nearly a century. The diocesan technical report identifies three phases: the first completed the three aisles, roofs and lower portions of transept and façade; a middle phase added the three external portals; the upper façade order was completed in 1646. It should not be assigned a single architect or one build date.³

The restoration report describes the façade as an elaborate sculptural composition with a unified iconographic programme. Its lower zone is organised around three openings and six large smooth-shafted columns with figurative capitals; a projecting balcony above is supported by seventeen telamons. These details belong to a conservation-sensitive stone fabric, not to disposable Baroque ornament.³

A 2011 loss of stone fragments exposed serious deterioration in the façade’s crowning zone, according to the Ministry.
