Lino Tagliapietra

From Murano furnaces to Pilchuck, a glass artist whose career connects making, design and teaching.

Lino Tagliapietra trained in Murano glassworks before developing an independent artistic practice. His career links furnace work, lamp design and teaching at Pilchuck Glass School.

Training in Murano

Lino Tagliapietra is an Italian glass artist born in Murano in 1934. He entered the Archimede Seguso glassworks as an apprentice in 1945. After a decade there, he moved to Galliano Ferro, became assistant master within a year and first master in 1957.1,2

A short Venini chapter

Tagliapietra worked at Venini from 1966 to 1968. He then joined La Murrina, where he combined glassmaking with the design of new pieces.1

Design and execution at La Murrina

A work named by the artist’s biography is The Anteater, a lamp designed and executed by Tagliapietra and produced by La Murrina. The work received a Grand Prix at the 1972 Barcelona Art Fair. It is a useful example of how his furnace mastery and individual design work could meet in one object.1
