Classico
- Characteristics
- A reference to a defined production area permitted alongside Valpolicella DOC.

Valpolicella DOC has Classico and Valpantena designations and a Superiore style, each within its defined Verona area.
Valpolicella’s wine history is written in its grape varieties, vine training and stone terraces.
Nineteenth-century catalogs of grape varieties established Corvina as a characteristic grape of Valpolicella. In 1881, Stefano de’ Stefani outlined Verona’s wine-growing areas, including the wines of Valpolicella. The first official Valpolicella production specification followed in 1968.
Growers also reshaped the vineyards. Simpler forms of the Veronese pergola replaced larger double pergolas, while old dry-stone terraces, known as marogne, were restored. These changes renewed the working landscape as well as the vines, bringing local cultivation traditions into a more closely managed vineyard.
Classico and Valpantena identify permitted place references; Superiore is a separate regulated qualification.
