A valley wine from the Adriatic side

Biferno takes its name from the river that runs from the Molise hills to the sea near Termoli.

The red blends Montepulciano with Aglianico, which adds backbone and a darker, more savoury edge. The white is built on Trebbiano Toscano with other local whites. The DOC offers red, rosé, white, red Superiore and red Riserva, so it is worth reading the label for which one you have.

Superiore and Riserva

The Riserva is aged for at least three years from the November after harvest. The Superiore asks for more alcohol and extract than the standard red, which makes it fuller and firmer.

Molise

The lower Biferno valley

Grapes come from a list of communes in Campobasso province, including Campobasso, Larino, Guglionesi, Montenero di Bisaccia and Termoli, on hillsides rather than on the valley floor.
