Salvatore Ferragamo established his Florence footwear company in 1927. Leather goods, ready-to-wear, silk and accessories followed; the company museum and historical archive keep its design history in view.

Florence, 1927

In 1927, Salvatore Ferragamo established a Florence company devoted to studying, designing, making and selling women’s shoes.1,2

Beyond footwear

The house expanded beyond shoes: its first leather-goods and women’s ready-to-wear collections appeared in 1965, followed by a silk and accessories collection in 1971.1,2

The museum’s changing lens

A 1985 exhibition at Palazzo Strozzi led to the family’s founding of the company museum in 1995. Since 2006, the museum has selected a different research theme each year, drawing connections between Ferragamo’s work and art, architecture, design and social history.3,4
