Achille Maramotti founded the first company of the Max Mara Group in 1951. From its Reggio Emilia roots, the house grew through women’s ready-to-wear, its own shops and coats, including Anne-Marie Beretta’s 101801 design of 1981.
Ready-to-wear from Reggio Emilia
Achille Maramotti founded Maramotti Collezioni in 1951, the first company of what became Max Mara Group. He set out to produce quality women’s clothing, and the group describes its early approach as high-end ready-to-wear made through industrial processes. The idea joined fashion design to a way of producing clothes beyond the individual atelier.1
A home in Reggio Emilia
The headquarters designed in 1955 for Max Mara stood at Via Fratelli Cervi 66 in Reggio Emilia. Architects Antonio Pastorini and Eugenio Salvarani gave the growing company an address that later also housed the Collezione Maramotti. In 2003 the group moved to a new campus on Via Giulia Maramotti, another chapter in its Reggio Emilia history.1
The first owned shop
Max Mara opened its first company-owned shop on Via Emilia in Reggio Emilia in 1964. Alongside the clothes themselves, the group was developing its own way of presenting and selling them. The first shop brought that direct retail model to the city associated with its beginnings.1
