High on a ridge above the vineyards of the Colli Orientali, this abbey has watched over Friuli's wine country since Benedictine monks founded it in the 9th century; the church was consecrated in 1070.

Inside, the choir keeps a fresco cycle from 1535 attributed to Francesco India, faded but legible saints looking down over stone worn smooth by nine centuries of feet. The complex now belongs to the Rosazzo Foundation, which farms the surrounding hillside as one of Friuli's most prized vineyards, so a visit here pairs easily with a glass of the abbey's own white wine on the terrace outside.

Four things worth finding

If you see nothing else, see these.

  1. The abbey church of San PietroRomanesque, consecrated 1070

A plain stepped facade of bare stone with a single portal and rose window opens onto a three-aisle interior shaped by a thousand years of rebuilding.Center of the complex

  2. The 1535 frescoesFrancesco India, called il Moro or Torbido

The whole fresco cycle dates to a single year, faded but still legible saints looking down over stone worn smooth by centuries.Inside the abbey church

  3. The cloister and the Chapel of the CrucifixionMonastic buildings

The quiet cloister is the heart of the old monastery, with the chapter house, dormitory and refectory arranged around it.Beside the church

  4. The hanging gardens and belvedereTerraces above the vineyards

The terraces look straight over the Colli Orientali vineyards, which makes them the natural place to finish the visit.Outside the abbey buildings

Getting there
The abbey sits on a hilltop a short drive from Cividale del Friuli or Manzano; there is no public transport directly to the site, but free parking at the top.

Free entry to the church year-round; special events (such as the May rose festival) may charge a small fee.

Stop at the small wine shop by the entrance before you leave: the abbey's own Rosazzo white, made from the vineyard you've just been looking at, is sold in only a handful of places outside the estate.

Good to know

How long should you spend at Rosazzo Abbey?

About an hour covers the church, the cloister and the gardens. If you plan to sit on the terrace with a glass of the local white, give it a little longer.

Is Rosazzo Abbey worth visiting?

Yes, if you like quiet hilltop places with real history. It has been a monastic site since the 9th century, it sits in the middle of Friuli wine country, and it is rarely crowded.

Can you see Rosazzo Abbey and Cividale del Friuli in one day?

Easily. Cividale and Rosazzo are close neighbors, so you can pair the Lombard sites and the Devil's Bridge in town with the abbey and a winery stop among the hills.
