CorinaldoCrowning a hill above the Cesano valley, Corinaldo keeps the best-preserved set of medieval walls in Marche, a near-complete circuit punctuated by towers and gates that you can still walk along.

FabrianoFor seven centuries Fabriano has made paper, and it was here, in the Middle Ages, that European watermarking was perfected. The craft still defines the town, which keeps a museum dedicated to paper and the watermark.

FanoA lively port and beach town at the Adriatic end of the ancient Via Flaminia, Fano still passes beneath the Arch of Augustus, the Roman gate that marks the road's arrival. Its carnival is one of the oldest in Italy.

GengaGenga guards the entrance to the Frasassi Caves, an underground world whose Abisso Ancona chamber is so vast it could swallow a cathedral, hung with giant stalagmites. Nearby, the little neoclassical Tempio del Valadier shelters inside a cliff grotto. GradaraA double ring of walls protects this borgo and its Malatesta fortress, the stronghold where Dante set the doomed love of Paolo and Francesca in the fifth canto of the Inferno. The ramparts give long views toward the sea.

JesiRinged by intact medieval walls, Jesi was the birthplace of the emperor Frederick II, born in a tent in its main square in 1194. The surrounding hills produce Verdicchio, one of central Italy's finest and most ageworthy white wines.
LoretoOne of Catholicism's great pilgrimage destinations, this hilltop town is built around the Basilica della Santa Casa, which shelters the venerated Holy House of Nazareth within a marble screen carved by Bramante's circle, watched over by a Black Madonna. MacerataThis warm brick hill town is famous for the Sferisterio, a vast neoclassical arena built for a ball game and now one of Italy's great open-air opera stages, its hundred-metre wall delivering near-perfect summer acoustics.

OffidaA small hill town devoted to lacemaking, Offida is known across Italy for its merletto a tombolo, the intricate bobbin lace worked by hand on cushions in doorways. Its winter carnival is among the region's most exuberant.
