The same grape, dry or passito

Montefalco Sagrantino distinguishes two red-wine paths.

Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG is made entirely from Sagrantino and recognizes Secco and Passito. The latter uses dried grapes; its drying rules allow humidity control and cooling but forbid heating. The distinction is central when choosing a bottle: the same grape name belongs to two separately defined wine styles.

Umbria

An Italian wine setting

The Montefalco denomination covers suitable land in all of Montefalco and delimited parts of Bevagna, Gualdo Cattaneo, Castel Ritaldi and Giano dell’Umbria, in the province of Perugia. Only well-exposed hillside land is suitable; valley floors are excluded.
