A Stone Island slate-blue denim jacket with two flap pockets and a black sleeve badge, laid on pale stone and linen.

Since 1982, Stone Island has treated fabric as a starting point for design. Tela Stella, the compass badge and later experiments such as Raso Gommato, Ice and Reflective fabrics show how material research has shaped the brand’s visual identity.

A brand born from a fabric

Stone Island dates its beginning to 1982, when designer Massimo Osti created Tela Stella, a washed and resin-printed military-derived canvas. The first jacket carried a compass badge.1

The compass as an emblem

The compass badge arrived with the first Tela Stella jacket in 1982. Stone Island describes it as a sign of exploration and connection; the emblem became a recognizable part of the garment and the brand.1

Milestones in material research

Raso Gommato, the Ice Jacket and the Reflective Jacket date to 1984, 1989 and 1992, respectively. These garments sit in the archive alongside other experiments in thermosensitive, reflective and metallic materials, giving the brand’s research a concrete form.1,2
