Prada began in 1913 with Mario Prada’s shop for travel goods in Milan’s Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. The Savoy symbols in its logo recall a royal appointment; nylon belongs to a much later chapter of the house’s material history.

A shop in the Galleria

Mario Prada opened the first Prada shop in Milan’s Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in 1913. It sold luxury travel articles and accessories.1,2

A royal appointment

In 1919, Prada became an Official Supplier to the Italian Royal Household. The appointment brought the Savoy coat of arms and knotted rope into its logo.1,2

Nylon as a design material

Nylon marks a later chapter. In its 2020 Re-Nylon presentation, Prada described more than four decades with the material and said the collection used regenerated nylon derived from plastic waste, fishing nets and textile-fibre waste.3
