B&B Italia

From C&B in 1966 to Coronado, the Up Series and a Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers headquarters in Novedrate.

The path of B&B Italia, from corporate change and material research to defining furniture and the architecture of its Novedrate headquarters.

A name change behind the 1966 origin

Piero Ambrogio Busnelli founded C&B in 1966 with Cesare Cassina. In 1973, Busnelli took control of C&B, which then adopted the B&B Italia name. The 1966 starting point belongs to C&B; B&B Italia is the name the company took later.1,2,3,4

Coronado and cold-moulded foam

Afra and Tobia Scarpa’s Coronado project dates to 1966. B&B Italia pairs its iron frame with cold-moulded polyurethane foam, a technology the company introduced to the furnishing sector. The design makes the production method legible: a structured frame and a moulded upholstered body work as one system.1,2,5,6

The original Up armchair travelled vacuum-packed

Gaetano Pesce designed the Up Series in 1969. The original chair was vacuum-packed. Its Serie Up 2000 sheet presents that edition as an evolution of the 1969 series and links its design to the company’s polyurethane injection-moulding expertise. In UP5_6, a chair and spherical ottoman form a sculptural pair; Pesce associated its female figure and ball with imprisonment.1,2,7,8,9,10
