Suasa was a Roman town founded after the Battle of Sentinum in 295 BC on land taken from the Senones, and it sat where a branch of the Via Flaminia crossed the Via Salaria Gallica. It flourished for centuries, was sacked by Alaric’s Goths in 409 and was abandoned after the Gothic War.

Since 1987 the University of Bologna has excavated a forum, theater and amphitheater. The star is the Domus dei Coiedii, a large aristocratic house with mosaic floors of remarkable quality and painted plaster. Part of it is visible on site; the rest is displayed in the civic archaeological museum in nearby Castelleone di Suasa, so plan to see both.

Getting there
The park is at Contrada Pian Volpello in the Cesano valley, inland from Senigallia on the Adriatic coast; the museum is in the village center of Castelleone di Suasa. A car is the practical way to reach both.

One ticket covers the archaeological park and the A. Casagrande Civic Archaeological Museum in Castelleone di Suasa. Free for children up to 14. Last updated September 2026. Prices change, so check the official site before you go.

Join the guided visit that runs during opening: the mosaics only make sense with the guide, and the museum in town then shows the panels that were lifted from the house.

Good to know

How long should you spend at Suasa?

Allow about two hours: the excavated park and then the civic museum in Castelleone di Suasa. The mosaics are split between the two, so skipping one means missing half the story.

Can you see Suasa and its museum in one visit?

Yes, and you should. A single ticket covers the archaeological park and the museum, which are in different places close together.

Is Suasa worth visiting?

Yes, if you enjoy Roman ruins without crowds. The Domus dei Coiedii mosaics are the main reason to go, along with a forum and the largest amphitheatre in the Marche.
