Seven granite islands and dozens of smaller islets and rocks make up La Maddalena's archipelago, set in some of the clearest water in the Mediterranean and protected since 1994 as a national park.

Ferries from Palau reach the main town after a short crossing, but the real draw lies beyond it: Budelli's Spiaggia Rosa, its sand tinted pink by crushed coral and shell fragments, has been off limits to swimmers and anchors since 1998 and is now seen only from a boat gliding past. On Caprera, Giuseppe Garibaldi farmed and wrote through his last years; his white house, the Compendio Garibaldino, still holds his furniture and weapons, and the plain room where he died in 1882.

Four things worth finding

If you see nothing else, see these.

  1. Spiaggia Rosa (Pink Beach)Natural feature, Budelli island

Crushed coral and shell tint the sand pink; landing and swimming are off limits, so you admire it from the boat.Budelli

  2. Garibaldi’s house (Compendio Garibaldino)Giuseppe Garibaldi, late 19th century

The white farmhouse where Garibaldi lived and died in 1882, with his furniture, weapons and the plain room of his death.Caprera

  3. Cala CorsaraNatural feature, Spargi island

A horseshoe of pale sand and turquoise shallows; the classic snorkeling stop on a boat day.Spargi

  4. Cala Coticcio (Tahiti)Natural feature, Caprera

A small granite cove with a white-sand beach, nicknamed Tahiti; reached by a protected path or by boat, never just by driving up.Caprera

Getting there
Ferries leave Palau's harbor for La Maddalena town frequently (the short crossing varies by operator); boat excursions to Budelli, Caprera, and the outer islands depart from La Maddalena's own harbor.

Entering the park on foot, by bike, or by private boat with the required authorization is free. Landing on Budelli's Spiaggia Rosa is forbidden; guided boat excursions from La Maddalena or Palau start at around €60 to €70 per person for a full day. The Compendio Garibaldino house museum on Caprera costs €6 (reduced €2) and uses timed, staggered entry.

Book a small-boat operator (12 passengers or fewer) for the Budelli run: the big group boats crowd the viewing point right when the pink sand catches the best mid-morning light.

Good to know

How long should you spend in the La Maddalena Archipelago?

Plan a full day for a boat tour of the main islands, about six hours. If you add time on La Maddalena town and Caprera, two days are better.

Can you swim at the Pink Beach on Budelli?

No. Swimming and landing have been banned since 1998 to protect the sand, so you see it from a boat. Other coves, such as Cala Corsara on Spargi, are better for a dip.

Do you need to book a boat trip in La Maddalena?

In high season, yes; boats fill and sea conditions decide departures. Ferries from Palau to La Maddalena run frequently without booking, but excursions to the outer islands are best reserved.
