The story

What you're tasting

Made from minimum 85% Montepulciano grapes across Abruzzo. Produces deeply colored, juicy reds with dark cherry, plum, and soft tannins. Outstanding value for everyday drinking. Not to be confused with the Tuscan town of Montepulciano.

Montepulciano d'Abruzzo's history begins in the 19th century when the Montepulciano grape became established as Abruzzo's primary red variety. The wine gained recognition in the 20th century when it became one of Italy's most exported red wines, celebrated for its deep color, soft tannins, and food-friendly character. The appellation received formal recognition in 1968 as DOC, codifying the production zone throughout Abruzzo and quality standards. Montepulciano d'Abruzzo's distinctive character comes from the region's diverse soils—from calcareous clay in the hills to alluvial soils in the valleys—and the grape's natural affinity for Abruzzo's warm, sun-drenched climate. The wine's international reputation grew in the 1980s-90s, when it became recognized as one of Italy's best-value red wines, celebrated for its approachability and food compatibility. The 2003 creation of Colline Teramane DOCG elevated the grape's status, recognizing exceptional quality from the hills surrounding Teramo. Today, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo represents the finest expression of Montepulciano, with Superiore and Colline Teramane DOCG wines showcasing the grape's capacity for complexity and aging.

The making

How it's made

Montepulciano d'Abruzzo production follows DOC regulations. The wine must be 100% Montepulciano from designated vineyards throughout Abruzzo. Harvest typically occurs in late September to early October, when the grape has achieved optimal ripeness. The grapes are harvested by hand, allowing for careful selection, then destemmed and crushed before transfer to fermentation vessels. Traditional producers favor extended maceration (12-20 days) in large oak barrels, extracting the grape's deep color while maintaining soft tannins. Modern producers may employ shorter maceration and stainless steel for freshness. During fermentation at controlled temperatures (26-28°C), the grape's thick skins release abundant color compounds. After primary fermentation, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation, enhancing texture. Standard Montepulciano d'Abruzzo can be released relatively young, while Superiore requires minimum 2 years aging (1 in wood), and Colline Teramane DOCG requires minimum 3 years aging (1 in wood). The wine must achieve minimum 12% alcohol and pass quality controls.

Montepulciano d'Abruzzo represents Abruzzo's red wine identity, a wine that demonstrates Montepulciano's capacity for approachability and value. In Abruzzese cuisine, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo flows alongside the region's hearty dishes, its soft tannins and deep color providing perfect balance. For Abruzzese, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo represents the region's winemaking tradition, a wine that honors Montepulciano's essential character while expressing the unique terroir of Abruzzo's diverse landscapes.
