The current national vine register lists Sagrantino N. under code 217 and records I - VCR 67 among its registered clones, with an issuance date of 19 June 2023.1
CREA identifies Sagrantino as Vitis vinifera L. and as a wine grape. For clone I-2 ISV-ICA PG, it reports compact bunches and good basal-bud fertility; these are clone-specific observations, not universal variety guarantees.3
Montefalco Sagrantino is a distinct protected wine designation. Its current specification requires that the DOCG wine derive exclusively from Sagrantino grapes.4,2
The DOCG production area is the municipality of Montefalco and specified parts of Bevagna, Gualdo Cattaneo, Castel Ritaldi and Giano dell'Umbria. Its wine types are Secco and Passito; those boundaries and types do not define the grape's exclusive cultivation area or every Sagrantino wine style.4
A 2010 decree used the wording Montefalco Sagrantino or Sagrantino di Montefalco. This is historic designation wording, not evidence of a second grape variety or a separate contemporary PDO identity.5,4
