Bolgheri DOC is a legally regulated designation. Its specification defines distinct wine types, grape rules, the Castagneto Carducci production zone, and type-specific maturation and labelling requirements. Bolgheri Sassicaia is a separate designation.

Verified details

Each statement below is linked to the record or institution that supports it.

Bolgheri is an Italian wine designation recorded by MASAF as a DOP/DOC. It is not a producer, estate, grape variety, or a synonym for Bolgheri Sassicaia.1

The Bolgheri DOC specification covers the types Bianco, Vermentino, Sauvignon, Rosato, Rosso and Rosso Superiore.2

The specification sets different grape-base rules by type. Bolgheri Vermentino and Bolgheri Sauvignon each require at least 85 percent of the named variety; Rosso, Rosso Superiore and Rosato have distinct permitted red-grape rules.2

Grapes for Bolgheri DOC must be produced in the administrative territory of Castagneto Carducci, Province of Livorno, excluding land west of the former Aurelia route, as defined by the specification.2

Bolgheri Rosso may be marketed no earlier than 1 September of the year after harvest. Bolgheri Rosso Superiore requires at least two years of ageing from 1 January after harvest, including at least one year in oak; labels must state the grape-harvest vintage and the geographic term Toscana.2

Bolgheri Sassicaia has a separate protected designation and production specification. It must not be represented as a Bolgheri DOC tier, a generic synonym, or an estate alias on this entity.3
