Vermentino di Gallura's history begins in the Gallura region of northern Sardinia, where Vermentino has been cultivated for centuries. The region's unique terroir—granite soils, Mediterranean climate, and coastal influence—creates Vermentino with distinctive crispness and minerality. The appellation received formal recognition in 1975 as DOC, then elevation to DOCG in 1996, making it Sardinia's first and only DOCG. Vermentino di Gallura's distinctive character comes from the region's unique terroir—granite soils and Mediterranean climate—which creates Vermentino with crisp, mineral character. The wine's international reputation grew in the 1990s-2000s, when it became recognized as one of Italy's finest white wines, celebrated for its elegance and complexity. Today, Vermentino di Gallura represents the finest expression of Sardinian white wine, with the wine's crisp, mineral character making it a favorite among wine enthusiasts seeking elegant, food-friendly whites.

La lavorazione

Come si fa

Vermentino di Gallura production follows strict DOCG regulations. The wine must contain minimum 95% Vermentino, with up to 5% other authorized white varieties. Harvest typically occurs in late August to early September, when Vermentino has achieved optimal ripeness while maintaining acidity. The grapes are harvested by hand, then gently pressed before transfer to temperature-controlled fermentation vessels. Fermentation occurs at low temperatures (14-16°C) to preserve aromatics, with some producers using stainless steel while others may use neutral oak. The wine must age minimum 3 months before release, with Superiore requiring 1 year minimum aging. The wine must achieve minimum 13.5% alcohol (Superiore) or 12.5% (standard) and pass quality controls. The wine's crisp, mineral character comes from the region's unique terroir—granite soils and Mediterranean climate—which creates Vermentino with distinctive elegance and complexity.

Vermentino di Gallura represents Sardinia's winemaking tradition, a wine that demonstrates the island's capacity for producing world-class whites. In Sardinian homes and restaurants, Vermentino di Gallura flows at seafood meals, its crisp, mineral character making it perfect for Mediterranean cuisine. For Sardinians, Vermentino di Gallura represents the island's unique terroir, a wine that honors Vermentino tradition while expressing the Gallura region's distinctive character.
