La storia

Che cosa stai assaggiando

Made from minimum 90% Nebbiolo (Chiavennasca) from five named subzones: Maroggia, Sassella, Grumello, Inferno, and Valgella. Aged 24 months (12 in wood), 36 for Riserva. These wines combine Nebbiolo's complexity with distinctive alpine minerality.

Valtellina Superiore's history begins in the Valtellina valley of northern Lombardy, where Nebbiolo has been cultivated for centuries on steep, terraced vineyards carved into the mountainsides. The region's unique terroir—high altitude, dramatic temperature swings, and alpine influence—creates Nebbiolo with distinctive alpine character, higher acidity, and more delicate tannins than Piedmont's Barolo and Barbaresco. The appellation received formal recognition in 1968 as DOC, then elevation to DOCG in 1998, codifying the production zone in the Valtellina valley and quality standards. Valtellina Superiore's distinctive character comes from the valley's unique terroir—steep terraced vineyards, high altitude, and alpine climate—which creates Nebbiolo with alpine elegance and exceptional aging potential. The wine's international reputation grew in the 1990s-2000s, when it became recognized as one of Italy's finest mountain wines, celebrated for its elegance and complexity. Today, Valtellina Superiore represents the finest expression of mountain Nebbiolo, with the wine's alpine character and aging potential making it a prized collector's wine.

La lavorazione

Come si fa

Valtellina Superiore production follows strict DOCG regulations. The wine must contain minimum 90% Nebbiolo (locally called Chiavennasca), with up to 10% other authorized red varieties. Harvest typically occurs in late October to early November, when Nebbiolo has achieved optimal ripeness in the valley's high-altitude vineyards. The grapes are harvested by hand from steep, terraced vineyards, then destemmed and crushed before transfer to fermentation vessels. Fermentation occurs at controlled temperatures (25-28°C) with extended maceration on skins for 15-25 days, depending on the desired style. The wine must age minimum 2 years before release (1 year in wood), with Riserva requiring 3 years minimum aging. Traditional producers favor large Slavonian oak botti, while modernists may use French barriques. The wine must achieve minimum 12% alcohol and pass quality controls. The wine's alpine character comes from the valley's unique terroir—high altitude, dramatic temperature swings, and alpine influence—which creates Nebbiolo with higher acidity and more delicate tannins than Piedmont.

Valtellina Superiore represents Lombardy's mountain winemaking tradition, a wine that demonstrates the region's capacity for producing world-class Nebbiolo in extreme alpine conditions. In Lombard homes and restaurants, Valtellina Superiore flows at special occasions, its alpine elegance and aging potential making it a prized wine. For Lombards, Valtellina Superiore represents the valley's unique terroir, a wine that honors Nebbiolo tradition while expressing the alpine region's distinctive character.
