Traditional amaro from Basilicata, founded in 1894. Balanced bitter profile with notes of herbs, roots, and spices. A classic digestif representing southern Italian herbal traditions. Amaro Lucano embodies the rugged character of Basilicata, with its balanced bitterness and herbal complexity reflecting the region's mountain terroir.
Amaro Lucano was created in 1894 by Pasquale Vena, a pastry chef from Pisticci, Basilicata, who developed the recipe in his family's bakery. The amaro was named after Lucania, the ancient name for Basilicata, reflecting the region's historical identity. Vena's recipe combined local herbs, roots, and spices to create a balanced, bitter digestif that quickly gained popularity throughout southern Italy. The brand's success grew steadily, with the Vena family maintaining control of production and guarding the secret recipe through generations. The distinctive bottle design—featuring the Lucano label with its characteristic red and gold colors—has become iconic, representing both the amaro and Basilicata's cultural heritage. Throughout the 20th century, Amaro Lucano became a symbol of southern Italian identity, particularly in Basilicata, where it is considered a point of regional pride. The brand maintained its independence and family ownership until 2015, when it was acquired by the Illva Saronno Group, though production continues in Pisticci, preserving the connection to the amaro's origins. Today, Amaro Lucano is recognized as one of Italy's classic amari, with its balanced profile and regional character appealing to both traditionalists and modern enthusiasts.
