Cavers from Ancona found a hole in the Frasassi gorge in 1971 and lowered themselves into the Abisso Ancona, a chamber vast enough to hold Milan Cathedral. The visitor route winds past crystal pools and stalagmites the size of towers, and the octagonal Valadier temple shelters in a cliff cave nearby.
