About Palio di Siena
The world's most famous historical horse race, held twice each summer in Piazza del Campo: July 2 for the Madonna di Provenzano and August 16 for the Assumption. Ten of Siena's seventeen contrade compete bareback in a ritual that is part race, part civic identity, and entirely Siena.
